Triolis/Location Recording by Al Swanson
I have been involved with audio and recording for more than 30 years—and with music most of my life. My undergraduate field was psychology (a quicker degree than music, though I took all the latter courses as well); my graduate work was in ethnomusicology, with field experience in the South Pacific Kingdom of Tonga. I have participated, as engineer, editor, and producer, in more than 700 commercial recording projects, along with countless local and syndicated radio and television broadcasts, film scores, and other commercial forms. My association with the Seattle Symphony, from 1984 until 2006, resulted in many Grammy-nominated CDs and several highly regarded national broadcast series. In addition to my work in audio production, I also have a few technical, newsletter, and trade articles to my credit, and have continued to be involved in the commercial side of the industry as a consultant for equipment manufacturers. I also participate in, when I can, audio and music education and public outreach. (I often describe myself as a “recovering musician”: Since I am now surrounded by active performers, I no longer have to be one. However, in previous incarnations I played trombone and, for many years, had a job as a church music director.) Less directly professional interests include photography, reading, writing, designing crossword puzzles, hiking, and house-building. Intellectual pursuits, such as my devious (if no longer youthfully nimble) mind can entertain them, include the study of history, ecology, evolution theory, and the various neurosciences, especially cognitive musicology. I live in the Pacific Northwest with my wife, violist Eileen Swanson. We have two grown children, Amy, an editor for Microsoft and amateur flutist (husband Geoff is a programmer), and Stephen, a double bass player and gambist, and conductor (wife Jeanne is a vioinist).
